After a death

What Is Embalming?

Embalming is a funeral-care procedure used to temporarily preserve the body; it is not automatically required.

What is the purpose of embalming?

Embalming is a preservation procedure used by some funeral directors to slow natural changes to the body, often where viewing or a delay before the funeral is expected.

Is embalming compulsory?

No. It is not a routine legal requirement for every death or funeral. Whether it is appropriate depends on the family's wishes, funeral arrangements and circumstances.

Is it the same as registering the death?

No. Registration, certification and any coroner process are legal or administrative steps. Embalming is a funeral-care choice and does not replace them.
